Rainy weather is a norm when you go to Laconia Bike Week in New Hampshire, but the 90th annual event started out with a bout from Tropical Storm Andrea and had the threat of strong thunderstorms throughout the week. It was enough to bring the numbers down from last year. Bikers, however, brought a rumble to the White Mountain region, and those that attended threw on the rain gear and leathers and took part in the 90-year-old rally, one of the oldest that is still going strong.
Not only does Laconia have beautiful scenery to make bike rides all the better, but also events such as the AMA Pro Hillclimb, flat track races, the vintage motorcycle races and the Laconia Biker Build-Off competition are always "go to" events. There are also plenty of charity runs that offer scenic escorted rides. It's a good way to see the local area.
The rally headquarters on Lakside Avenue in front of the pier was the starting point of other scenic rides such as the Ride to the Sky, which takes bikers to Mount Washingtion. It also is a good place to get information, maps and advice on where to go and what to see. There was also the new mobile device app, the Laconia Mobile Guide, that put you in touch with everything that is Laconia Bike Week right at your fingertips from your phone.
Bike builder and metal artist Ron Finch drew crowds to the Broken Spoke Saloon to check out the extra-large bike that Finch built sitting on the front lawn. Thousands of vendors selling everything from clothing to riding gear to T-shirts and parts could be found in Weirs Beach where bike week is centralized.
Laconia Bike Week is a popular event fror bikers from all over the world, and every June they travel to the White Mountains to party, meet new and old friends and enjoy the events and beautiful scenery. Next year, Laconia Rally will take place June 14-22.
