Police were making a concerted effort to keep a senior Hells Angels member behind bars by conducting raids that were either sloppy or incompetent, a court has heard.
Peter John Hewat, 57, is applying for bail after he was remanded following police raids on his home and towing business last month.
The Supreme Court heard Hewat was already on bail for other charges and had allegedly committed further offences after police found cash and other items they said were stolen.
But Hewat’s lawyer told the court that the money was business proceeds and said the items allegedly stolen were already there when police raided the properties in March.
He said it couldn’t be known who stole them, if in fact they were stolen, and said they could also belong to Hewat’s son who also lived there.
His lawyer said whether the initial raids in March were sloppy or incompetent or anything in-between, there seemed to be a concerted effort to keep him behind bars.
Justice John Dixon will hand down his decision at 3pm.
